4626.1635 DRYING AGENTS; CRITERIA. 7-204.14

A.

Drying agents used in conjunction with sanitization must contain only components that are listed as one of the following:

(1)

generally recognized as safe for use in food as specified in Code of Federal Regulations, title 21, part 182 or 184;P1

(2)

generally recognized as safe for the intended use as specified in Code of Federal Regulations, title 21, part 186;P1

(3)

generally recognized as safe for the intended use as determined by experts qualified in scientific training and experience to evaluate the safety of substances added directly or indirectly to food as described in Code of Federal Regulations, title 21, part 170, subpart B, section 170.30;P1

(4)

the subject of an effective Food Contact Notification (FCN) for use as a component of a drying agent as described in United States Code, title 21, section 348(h);P1

(5)

approved for use as a drying agent under a prior sanction as described in United States Code, title 21, section 321(s)(4);P1

(6)

specifically regulated as an indirect food additive for use as a drying agent as specified in Code of Federal Regulations, title 21, parts 174 to 178;P1 or

(7)

approved for use as a drying agent under the threshold of regulation process established by Code of Federal Regulations, title 21, part 170, subpart B, section 170.39.P1

B.

When sanitization is with chemicals, the approval required under item A, subitem (5) or (7), or the regulation as an indirect food additive as required under item A, subitem (6), must be specifically for use with chemical sanitizing solutions.P1
