124D.871 MAGNET SCHOOL AND PROGRAM GRANTS.
(a) The commissioner of education, in consultation with the desegregation/integration office
under section 124D.892, shall award grants to school districts and chartered public schools for
planning and developing magnet schools and magnet programs.
(b) Grant recipients must use the grant money under paragraph (a) to establish or operate a
magnet school or a magnet program and provide all students with equal educational opportunities.
Grant recipients may expend grant money on:
(1) teachers who provide instruction or services to students in a magnet school or magnet
program;
(2) educational paraprofessionals who assist teachers in providing instruction or services to
students in a magnet school or magnet program;
(3) clerical support needed to operate a magnet school or magnet program;
(4) equipment, equipment maintenance contracts, materials, supplies, and other property
needed to operate a magnet school or magnet program;
(5) minor remodeling needed to operate a magnet school or magnet program;
(6) transportation for field trips that are part of a magnet school or magnet program
curriculum;
(7) program planning and staff and curriculum development for a magnet school or magnet
program;
(8) disseminating information on magnet schools and magnet programs; and
(9) indirect costs calculated according to the state's statutory formula governing indirect costs.
