RESOLUTION 8--H.F.No. 452
A resolution memorializing the Postmaster General;
urging the issuance of a postal stamp to commemorate
the centennial of the first shipment of iron ore from
Minnesota.
WHEREAS, iron ore was first shipped from the Iron Range of
Minnesota in 1884; and
WHEREAS, since then the Iron Range has supplied millions of
tons of iron ore that were used to create buildings, industry,
communications systems, and transportation systems in America
and the world; and
WHEREAS, during World War II the Iron Range furnished over
90 percent of the iron ore used in that victorious effort; and
WHEREAS, the Iron Range continues to furnish its key
resource to America and the world; and
WHEREAS, in 1984 the Iron Range will commemorate the
centennial of the first shipment of iron ore; and
WHEREAS, an event as significant as this centennial must be
specially commemorated; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota
that it urges the Postmaster General to authorize the issuance
of a special stamp to commemorate the centennial of the first
shipment of iron ore from Minnesota's Iron Range.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the
state of Minnesota is directed to transmit certified copies of
this memorial to the Postmaster General and to Minnesota's
Senators and Representatives in Congress.
