RESOLUTION 3-H.F.No. 20
A resolution memorializing the United States Secretary
of Agriculture to establish higher price supports for
grain commodities.
WHEREAS, during 1992, Minnesota's farmers were troubled by
adverse weather conditions including wet weather, a cool summer,
and tornadoes; and
WHEREAS, in many parts of the country the fall harvest was
nearly disastrous because of extremely low grain test weights
and very high moisture content; and
WHEREAS, the market price for grain commodities produced by
family farms is currently well below the cost of production; and
WHEREAS, the benefits of a healthy farm economy are shared
by all citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Secretary of Agriculture has authority to
increase levels of price support; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota
that it urges the United States Secretary of Agriculture to use
the authority granted by United States Code, title 7, section
1422, to hold hearings and establish price supports for grain
commodities at a level in excess of the support price otherwise
prescribed.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the
State of Minnesota is directed to prepare certified copies of
this memorial and transmit them to the President of the United
States, the United States Secretary of Agriculture, the chairman
of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, the chairman of the
House Committee on Agriculture, and Minnesota's Senators and
Representatives in Congress.
