                        CHAPTER 197-S.F.No. 1187
           An act relating to local government; regulating 
          municipal employee residency requirements; exempting 
          certain firefighters; amending Minnesota Statutes 
          1984, section 415.16, by adding a subdivision. 
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
    Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1984, section 415.16, is 
amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
    Subd. 3.  A statutory or home rule charter city or county 
may impose a reasonable residency requirement on persons 
employed as volunteers or as members of a nonprofit firefighting 
corporation if there is a demonstrated, job-related necessity.  
The residency requirement must be related to response time and 
established without regard to political subdivision boundaries.
