Definition

Minnesota Rules of Court are rules adopted by the Supreme Court of Minnesota, governing legal proceedings in the various courts in the state. Other documents that are included here are the Sentencing Guidelines, which are promulgated by the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission and the Lawyer's Professional Responsibility Board Opinions.

The court rules also contain court orders, notes, and comments of the drafters.

Finding a Rule

Court rules are grouped within the following subject matter categories: Criminal Procedure, Sentencing Guidelines, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Miscellaneous, Record Access, General Rules of Practice, District Court Special Rules, Juvenile Court, Appellate Procedure and Professional Rules.

The court rules are fully indexed and searchable to assist users in finding particular rules.

Web Update Schedule

Following an Order of the Supreme Court promulgating amendments to the rules of court, a new or amended rule is reviewed and incorporated into the revisor’s court rule database. When the new or amended rule is effective, the chapter or chapters containing the new or amended rule is or are updated on the website.

Print Publication

Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 3C.08, the Revisor of Statutes publishes Minnesota Court Rules in a separate volume that accompanies Minnesota Statutes. This official edition is published every even-numbered year. A supplement is published in odd-numbered years.
