  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to health; modifying fees for vital records; 
  1.3             amending Minnesota Statutes 1995 Supplement, section 
  1.4             144.226, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1995 Supplement, section 
  1.7   144.226, subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [WHICH SERVICES ARE FOR FEE.] The fees for 
  1.9   any of the following services shall be in an amount prescribed 
  1.10  by rule of the commissioner: 
  1.11     (a) The issuance of a certified copy or certification of a 
  1.12  vital record, or a certification that the record cannot be 
  1.13  found, provided that a fee shall not be charged for any 
  1.14  certified copy required for service in the armed forces or the 
  1.15  Merchant Marine of the United States or required in the 
  1.16  presentation of claims to the United States Veterans 
  1.17  Administration; 
  1.18     (b) The replacement of a birth certificate; 
  1.19     (c) The filing of a delayed registration of birth or death; 
  1.20     (d) The alteration, correction, or completion of any vital 
  1.21  record, provided that no fee shall be charged for an alteration, 
  1.22  correction, or completion requested within one year after the 
  1.23  filing of the certificate; and 
  1.24     (e) The verification of information from or noncertified 
  1.25  copies of vital records.  Fees charged shall approximate the 
  2.1   costs incurred in searching and copying the records.  The fee 
  2.2   shall be payable at time of application.
