relating to the legislature; imposing penalties for
certain cellular telephone use during legislative
meetings; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota
Statutes, chapter 609.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
Section 1.

[609.476] CELLULAR TELEPHONES IN LEGISLATIVE
HEARINGS.

(a) A member of the legislature must not receive an
incoming cellular telephone call that creates an audible noise
in the house or senate chamber during a house or senate floor
session or in a legislative hearing room while a hearing is
being conducted.

(b) A member of the legislature in possession of a cellular
telephone that makes an audible noise in circumstances described
in paragraph (a) is guilty of a misdemeanor.

Sec. 2. new text begin EFFECTIVE DATE.

Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment
and applies to crimes committed on or after that date.
