  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to state government; canceling and preventing 
  1.3             increases in the compensation of legislators and 
  1.4             constitutional officers.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [COMPENSATION RESTRICTION.] 
  1.7      The compensation of legislators and constitutional officers 
  1.8   may not be increased until January 1, 1997.  The compensation 
  1.9   increase for legislators and constitutional officers recommended 
  1.10  by the compensation council in 1989 shall not take effect.  Any 
  1.11  additional compensation paid pursuant to that recommendation 
  1.12  before the effective date of this act shall be deducted from 
  1.13  salary payments after the effective date of this act.  The 
  1.14  compensation council appointed under Laws 1994, chapter 560, 
  1.15  article 2, section 21, shall not recommend salaries for 
  1.16  legislators or constitutional officers.  
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.18     This act takes effect the day after final enactment.
