A resolution
urging Congress to reject proposals that would diminish the strength of Medicare and
Social Security.
WHEREAS, Medicare and Social Security are essential programs that provide financial and
health security to millions of America's seniors, including over a million Minnesota residents; and
WHEREAS, these programs have served as a foundation of economic stability for seniors,
disabled individuals, and veterans for generations; and
WHEREAS, recent proposals and legislative efforts at the federal level have raised concerns
about potential cuts, privatization, or other measures that could undermine the viability of Medicare
and Social Security; and
WHEREAS, any reductions in benefits or limitations on eligibility would place an undue
burden on Minnesota's seniors and most vulnerable residents, jeopardizing their ability to afford
health care, prescription medications, and basic living expenses; and
WHEREAS, nearly half of older Americans have no retirement savings and more than half
of older adults rely on Social Security for a majority of their income; and
WHEREAS, Social Security lifts more than 16 million older adults and almost one million
children out of poverty every year; and
WHEREAS, ensuring the solvency and effectiveness of these programs is not only a matter
of economic security but also a reflection of our commitment to the dignity and well-being of our
residents; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Minnesota State Senate condemns any
federal legislative or executive actions that would reduce or eliminate Medicare or Social Security
for Minnesota seniors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Minnesota State Senate hereby calls upon the United
States Congress to reject any proposals that would diminish the strength of these critical programs
and instead advocate for policies that enhance their long-term sustainability.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is directed
to prepare enrolled copies of this memorial and transmit it to the Speaker of the United States House
of Representatives, the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, the Majority
Leader of the United States Senate, the Minority Leader of the United States Senate, and Minnesota's
Senators and Representatives in Congress.
