1.1A bill for an act 1.2relating to veterans; authorizing commissioner of public safety to dispose 1.3of unused special veterans' license plates;proposing coding for new law in 1.4Minnesota Statutes, chapter 168. 1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.6    Section 1. new text begin [168.1234] DISPOSING OF UNUSED VETERANS LICENSE PLATES. new text end 1.7     new text begin Subdivision 1. new text end new text begin Definitions. new text end new text begin For purposes of this section, the following terms have new text end 1.8 new text begin the meanings given them: new text end 1.9 new text begin (a) "Unused veteran's license plate type" means any type of special veteran's license new text end 1.10 new text begin plate authorized under section 168.123, subdivision 2, paragraphs (a) to (d) and (f) to (i), new text end 1.11 new text begin for which the commissioner of veterans affairs has determined that the eligible population new text end 1.12 new text begin of veterans has ceased to exist within Minnesota, and for which the commissioner of new text end 1.13 new text begin public safety has determined that there are no registered vehicles bearing such plates new text end 1.14 new text begin within the state. new text end 1.15 new text begin (b) "Veteran" has the meaning assigned in section 197.447. new text end 1.16     new text begin Subd. 2. new text end new text begin Authority to dispose of unused plates. new text end new text begin (a) Notwithstanding any other new text end 1.17 new text begin provision of this chapter, the commissioner of public safety is authorized to discontinue the new text end 1.18 new text begin sale of any unused special veteran's license plate type. Remaining stock of discontinued new text end 1.19 new text begin special veterans' plates must be transferred to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The new text end 1.20 new text begin Department of Veterans Affairs must collaborate with charitable veteran organizations to new text end 1.21 new text begin auction the plates. new text end 1.22 new text begin (b) Before selling plates of any unused special veteran's license plate type, the new text end 1.23 new text begin commissioner must declare and publicly announce that plates of that type are no longer new text end 1.24 new text begin valid for purposes of motor vehicle registration within the state. new text end 2.1     new text begin Subd. 3. new text end new text begin Proceeds. new text end new text begin Proceeds from the sale of unused veterans' special license plates new text end 2.2 new text begin under this section must be provided to charitable veteran organizations. new text end 2.3 new text begin EFFECTIVE DATE. new text end new text begin This section is effective July 1, 2008. new text end
