1.1A bill for an act 1.2relating to Minnesota heritage; adopting a state anthem; establishing a Minnesota 1.3State Song Commission;proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 1.4chapter 1. 1.5BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.6    Section 1. new text begin [1.1499] STATE ANTHEM.new text end 1.7    new text begin "Hail Minnesota," adopted by the legislature as the state song in 1945, is adopted new text end 1.8new text begin as the official anthem of the state of Minnesota, provided that the lyrics of the anthem new text end 1.9new text begin adopted by the legislature are gender neutral.new text end 1.10    Sec. 2. new text begin MINNESOTA STATE SONG COMMISSION.new text end 1.11    new text begin (a) The legislature finds and declares that it is in the interest of the state of Minnesota new text end 1.12new text begin to adopt an official and unique state song. new text end 1.13    new text begin (b) A Minnesota State Song Commission is established to recommend an official new text end 1.14new text begin state song for adoption by the legislature. The commission shall consist of nine members. new text end 1.15new text begin Four members must be appointed by the president of the Minnesota Music Educators new text end 1.16new text begin Association in consultation with that organization's board of directors; four members must new text end 1.17new text begin be appointed by the executive director of the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission new text end 1.18new text begin in consultation with Sesquicentennial Commission members; and one member must be new text end 1.19new text begin appointed by the governor. Members of the commission must be appointed and the new text end 1.20new text begin commission must convene its first meeting within 30 days of enactment of this section. new text end 1.21new text begin Members of the commission serve without compensation.new text end 1.22    new text begin (c) The commission shall solicit musical compositions from the public.new text end 2.1    new text begin (d) The commission must recommend a new state song to the chairs of the standing new text end 2.2new text begin committees of the house of representatives and senate having jurisdiction over state new text end 2.3new text begin governmental operations by December 31, 2008.new text end 2.4    new text begin (e) The state Humanities Commission shall provide meeting space and administrative new text end 2.5new text begin support to the Minnesota State Song Commission.new text end 2.6    new text begin (f) The Minnesota State Song Commission expires January 1, 2009.new text end 2.7new text begin EFFECTIVE DATE.new text end new text begin This section is effective the day following final enactment.new text end
