A bill for an act
relating to public safety; requiring certain level II and III predatory offenders to
wear GPS tracking system devices; appropriating money; proposing coding for
new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 244.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

PREDATORY OFFENDERS; GPS SYSTEM.

new text begin The commissioner shall require all predatory offenders
assigned under section 244.052 to risk level II or III and placed on supervised or
conditional release to be monitored with a global positioning system electronic monitoring
device. The commissioner shall develop tracking system specifications and place purchase
of the devices up for bid.

new text begin The commissioner may assess all or a portion of the cost of the
tracking and monitoring device to the offender based on the offender's ability to pay, as
determined by the commissioner.

new text begin This section is effective the day following final enactment
and applies to offenders released from prison on or after that date.

Sec. 2. new text begin APPROPRIATION.
