  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to the legislature; reducing the number of 
  1.3             members of the senate and house of representatives; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, sections 2.021; and 
  1.5             2.031; repealing Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 
  1.6             2.031, subdivision 2. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 2.021, is 
  1.9   amended to read: 
  1.10     2.021 [NUMBER OF MEMBERS.] 
  1.11     For each legislature, until a new apportionment shall have 
  1.12  been made, the senate is composed of 67 45 members and the house 
  1.13  of representatives is composed of 134 90 members. 
  1.14     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 2.031, 
  1.15  subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.16     Subdivision 1.  [LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS.] The 
  1.17  representatives in the senate and house of representatives are 
  1.18  apportioned throughout the state in 67 45 senate districts and 
  1.19  134 90 house districts.  Each senate district is entitled to 
  1.20  elect one senator and each house district is entitled to elect 
  1.21  one representative. 
  1.22     Sec. 3.  [REPEALER.] 
  1.23     Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 2.031, subdivision 2, is 
  1.24  repealed. 
  1.25     Sec. 4.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.26     Sections 1 to 3 are effective for legislatures elected to 
  2.1   begin service in January 2003, and thereafter.
