  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to crime; exempting law enforcement officers 
  1.3             from certain firearms restrictions while acting in the 
  1.4             course of official duties; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.5             1996, section 609.66, subdivision 2. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 609.66, 
  1.8   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2.  [EXCEPTIONS.] Nothing in this section prohibits 
  1.10  the possession of the articles mentioned by museums or 
  1.11  collectors of art or for other lawful purposes of public 
  1.12  exhibition.  Nothing in this section prohibits the possession of 
  1.13  devices designed to silence or muffle the discharge of a firearm 
  1.14  by law enforcement officers in the course of their official 
  1.15  duties. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.17     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1997, and applies to 
  1.18  crimes committed on or after that date.
