  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to motor vehicles; prohibiting the imposition 
  1.3             of certain impoundment charges on stolen vehicles; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 168.042, by 
  1.5             adding a subdivision.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 168.042, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3a.  [IMPOUNDMENT CHARGES ON STOLEN VEHICLES 
  1.10  PROHIBITED.] (a) As used in this subdivision, "impoundment" 
  1.11  means the removal of a motor vehicle to a municipal storage 
  1.12  facility or municipal impound lot as authorized by a local 
  1.13  ordinance. 
  1.14     (b) A motor vehicle owner is not liable to pay any charges 
  1.15  relating to the impoundment of the owner's vehicle if the owner 
  1.16  presents to the manager of the impound lot or storage facility a 
  1.17  police report or other verification that the vehicle was stolen 
  1.18  at the time of the impoundment.
