  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for grants to certain 
  1.3             school districts for coordination of volunteer 
  1.4             networks for reading mentorships; appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [READING MENTORSHIP GRANTS.] 
  1.7      The commissioner of children, families, and learning may 
  1.8   make grants to independent school district No. 625, St. Paul, 
  1.9   and special school district No. 1, Minneapolis, for coordination 
  1.10  of volunteer networks providing reading mentorships for children 
  1.11  in kindergarten through grade 3.  The commissioner shall provide 
  1.12  the criteria for the grant programs.  The school district 
  1.13  superintendent shall appoint the program coordinator.  The 
  1.14  individual holding the coordinator position must show evidence 
  1.15  of experience with volunteer organizations.  The district school 
  1.16  board must approve the program details. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.18     $....... is appropriated in fiscal year 1997 from the 
  1.19  general fund to the department of children, families, and 
  1.20  learning for the purposes of section 1.
