1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to insurance; health; requiring health plans 1.3 to provide coverage for a minimum of 48 hours of 1.4 in-patient care for a mother and her newly born child 1.5 following a vaginal birth or for a minimum of 96 hours 1.6 of in-patient care following a cesarean section; 1.7 proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 1.8 chapter 62A. 1.9 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.10 Section 1. [62A.0421] [IN-PATIENT CARE FOLLOWING 1.11 CHILDBIRTH; MINIMUM COVERAGE REQUIREMENTS.] 1.12 Subdivision 1. [NAME AND CITATION.] This section shall be 1.13 known and may be cited as the "mothers' and newborns' health 1.14 protection act." 1.15 Subd. 2. [MINIMUM IN-PATIENT CARE COVERAGE.] A health plan 1.16 shall provide coverage for a minimum of 48 hours of in-patient 1.17 care following a vaginal delivery, and a minimum of 96 hours of 1.18 in-patient care following a cesarean section, for a mother and 1.19 her newly born child. 1.20 Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE; APPLICABILITY.] 1.21 Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment 1.22 and applies to a health plan issued or renewed on or after that 1.23 date to provide coverage to Minnesota residents.
