1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to crime; prohibiting the possession of code 1.3 grabbing devices under certain circumstances; 1.4 prescribing penalties; proposing coding for new law in 1.5 Minnesota Statutes, chapter 609. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. [609.586] [POSSESSION OF CODE GRABBING DEVICES; 1.8 PENALTY.] 1.9 Subdivision 1. [DEFINITION.] As used in this section, 1.10 "code grabbing device" means a device that can receive and 1.11 record the coded signal sent by the transmitter of a security or 1.12 other electronic system and can play back the signal to disarm 1.13 or operate that system. 1.14 Subd. 2. [CRIME.] Whoever possesses a code grabbing device 1.15 with intent to use the device to commit an unlawful act may be 1.16 sentenced to imprisonment for not more than three years or to 1.17 payment of a fine of not more than $5,000, or both. 1.18 Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 1.19 Section 1 is effective August 1, 1996, and applies to 1.20 crimes committed on or after that date.
