                         CHAPTER 40-S.F.No. 203 
           An act relating to intoxicating liquor; authorizing an 
          on-sale liquor license for the Minneapolis convention 
          center, the Orpheum Theatre, the State Theatre, and a 
          restaurant in the city; amending Minnesota Statutes 
          1988, section 340A.404, subdivision 2; repealing Laws 
          1973, chapter 505. 
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
     Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1988, section 340A.404, 
subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
    Subd. 2.  [SPECIAL PROVISION; CITY OF MINNEAPOLIS.] (a) The 
city of Minneapolis may issue an on-sale intoxicating liquor 
license to the Guthrie Theatre and, the Cricket Theatre, the 
Orpheum Theatre, and the State Theatre, notwithstanding the 
limitations of law, or local ordinance, or charter provision 
relating to zoning or school or church distances.  The licenses 
authorize sales on all days of the week to holders of tickets 
for dramatic performances presented by the theatres and to 
members of the nonprofit corporations holding the licenses and 
to their guests. 
      (b) The city of Minneapolis may issue an intoxicating 
liquor license to 510 Groveland Associates, a Minnesota 
cooperative, for use by a restaurant on the premises owned by 
510 Groveland Associates, notwithstanding limitations of law, or 
local ordinance, or charter provision. 
    Sec. 2.  [MINNEAPOLIS CONVENTION CENTER LIQUOR LICENSE.] 
    Notwithstanding any law, ordinance, or charter provision to 
the contrary, the Minneapolis city council may issue and renew 
an on-sale intoxicating liquor license for the Minneapolis 
convention center.  The fee for the license shall be set by the 
council.  The license must be issued in accordance with laws 
governing issuance of on-sale intoxicating liquor licenses in 
cities of the first class not inconsistent with this section and 
with city charter and ordinances not inconsistent with this 
section.  The license shall limit the sale of intoxicating 
liquor to patrons attending events at the convention center and 
shall not be valid for amateur athletic events. 
    Sec. 3.  [REPEAL.] 
    Laws 1973, chapter 505, is repealed. 
    Sec. 4.  [LOCAL APPROVAL.] 
    Sections 1 to 3 are effective on approval by the 
Minneapolis city council and compliance with Minnesota Statutes, 
section 645.021.
