                        CHAPTER 127-H.F.No. 555 
           An act relating to crimes; prohibiting giving peace 
          officers false names; prescribing penalties; proposing 
          coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 609. 
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
    Section 1.  [609.506] [PROHIBITING GIVING PEACE OFFICER 
FALSE NAME.] 
    Whoever with intent to obstruct justice gives a false or 
fictitious name other than a nickname, or gives a false date of 
birth, or false or fraudulently altered identification card to a 
peace officer, as defined in section 626.84, subdivision 2, 
paragraph (c), when that officer makes inquiries incident to a 
lawful investigatory stop or lawful arrest, or inquiries 
incident to executing any other duty imposed by law, is guilty 
of a misdemeanor. 
    Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
    Section 1 is effective August 1, 1987, and applies to 
crimes committed on or after that date.
