A bill for an act
relating to health; establishing a research program to measure the impact on
health care treatment outcomes and costs of providing iron-rich foods to children
and pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia; appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin APPROPRIATION; GRANT PROGRAM TO INTEGRATE FOOD
DISTRIBUTION IN TREATMENT OF IRON DEFICIENCY.

new text begin $250,000 in fiscal years 2017, 2018, and 2019 are appropriated from the general
fund to the commissioner of health to provide a grant to a clinical program that will
furnish iron-rich food and targeted nutrition education to high-risk pregnant women and
families of children under age 21 to treat iron deficiency anemia. The grantee must use
grant funds for the costs of:

new text begin (1) a clinical intervention consisting of colocated iron-rich food distribution and
targeted nutrition education services provided to pregnant women and families of children
under age 21 who have been diagnosed with or are at high risk of having iron deficiency
anemia at levels creating an increased risk of impaired growth and development,
susceptibility to lead poisoning, and other adverse health outcomes; and

new text begin (2) program evaluation to study the impact of the colocated clinical food distribution
and nutrition education program on health care costs and treatment outcomes. The grantee
must submit a report on the grant program and its results to the commissioner of health
after completion of the three-year grant program.
