  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to retirement; authorizing the Minneapolis 
  1.3             fire department relief association to pay survivor 
  1.4             benefits to certain persons.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [SURVIVOR BENEFITS.] 
  1.7      Notwithstanding any law requiring a marriage to have been 
  1.8   in existence for five years for survivor benefits to be payable, 
  1.9   a person who but for the five-year requirement would be 
  1.10  eligible, may receive a surviving spouse benefit from the 
  1.11  Minneapolis fire department relief association if the person: 
  1.12     (1) was married in January 1993 to a person who retired 
  1.13  from the Minneapolis fire department in March 1985; and 
  1.14     (2) remained married to that person until the person's 
  1.15  death in October 1997. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [LOCAL APPROVAL.] 
  1.17     Section 1 is effective on the day after compliance by the 
  1.18  Minneapolis city council with Minnesota Statutes, section 
  1.19  645.021, subdivision 2.
