  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to employment; school conference and activity 
  1.3             leave; making technical changes; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 2002, section 181.9412, subdivision 2. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 181.9412, 
  1.7   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 2.  [LEAVE OF 16 HOURS.] An employer must grant an 
  1.9   employee leave of up to a total of 16 hours during any 12-month 
  1.10  period each school year to attend school conferences or 
  1.11  school-related activities related to the employee's child 
  1.12  children, provided the conferences or school-related activities 
  1.13  cannot be scheduled during nonwork hours.  If the employee's 
  1.14  child receives children receive child care services as defined 
  1.15  in section 119B.011, subdivision 7, or attends attend a 
  1.16  prekindergarten regular or special education program, the 
  1.17  employee may use the leave time provided in this section to 
  1.18  attend a conference or activity related to the employee's child 
  1.19  children, or to observe and monitor the services or program, 
  1.20  provided the conference, activity, or observation cannot be 
  1.21  scheduled during nonwork hours.  When the leave cannot be 
  1.22  scheduled during nonwork hours and the need for the leave is 
  1.23  foreseeable, the employee must provide reasonable prior notice 
  1.24  of the leave and make a reasonable effort to schedule the leave 
  1.25  so as not to disrupt unduly the operations of the employer.
