  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crimes; permitting a court to order 
  1.3             suspension of a driver's license for a period of up to 
  1.4             one year if defendant was convicted or adjudicated 
  1.5             delinquent for theft of gasoline; amending Minnesota 
  1.6             Statutes 2000, section 609.52, by adding a 
  1.7             subdivision; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.8             Statutes, chapter 171. 
  1.9   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.10     Section 1.  [171.175] [SUSPENSION; THEFT OF GASOLINE 
  1.11  OFFENSE.] 
  1.12     The commissioner of public safety shall suspend the license 
  1.13  of any person convicted or juvenile adjudicated delinquent for 
  1.14  theft of gasoline under section 609.52 when so directed by a 
  1.15  court. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 609.52, is 
  1.17  amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.18     Subd. 5.  [SUSPENSION OF DRIVER'S LICENSE FOR GASOLINE 
  1.19  THEFT.] In addition to other applicable criminal penalties, the 
  1.20  court may order the commissioner of public safety to suspend for 
  1.21  up to one year the driver's license of a person convicted of or 
  1.22  adjudicated delinquent for violating this section if the theft 
  1.23  involved gasoline, as defined in section 296A.01, subdivision 23.
  1.24     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.25     Sections 1 and 2 are effective August 1, 2001, and apply to 
  1.26  crimes committed on or after that date.
