  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; authorizing a prior service 
  1.3             credit purchase for certain teachers. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [SERVICE CREDIT PURCHASE; TEACHERS RETIREMENT 
  1.6   ASSOCIATION.] 
  1.7      (a) Notwithstanding any other law, an eligible person 
  1.8   described in paragraph (b) is entitled to obtain allowable and 
  1.9   formula service credit in the teachers retirement association 
  1.10  for the periods described in paragraph (c) upon the payment of 
  1.11  the full service credit purchase amount specified in Minnesota 
  1.12  Statutes, section 356.55. 
  1.13     (b) An eligible person is a person who: 
  1.14     (1) was born on October 11, 1963; 
  1.15     (2) was injured in an automobile accident in 1993; 
  1.16     (3) served as a teacher for independent school district No. 
  1.17  12, Centennial beginning in 1990; and 
  1.18     (4) was forced to reduce to part-time teaching service 
  1.19  during the 1993-1994, 1994-1995, and 1995-1996 school years 
  1.20  because of the accident. 
  1.21     (c) The periods for service credit purchase are the 
  1.22  portions of the 1993-1994, 1994-1995, and 1995-1996 school years 
  1.23  that the eligible person did not receive service credit for 
  1.24  because of the person's part-time status. 
  2.1      (d) In order to receive service credit for the periods 
  2.2   described in paragraph (c), the eligible person must pay to the 
  2.3   teachers retirement association, on or before October 1, 2001, 
  2.4   the amount determined under Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55, 
  2.5   required to pay for allowable and formula service credit in the 
  2.6   teachers retirement association. 
  2.7      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.8      Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
