  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; providing criminal 
  1.3             penalties for persons who threaten to harm a school 
  1.4             official; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 
  1.5             609.713, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.713, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 4.  [THREATS TO HARM SCHOOL OFFICIAL.] Whoever 
  1.10  threatens, directly or indirectly, to inflict bodily harm on a 
  1.11  school official, knowing that the victim is a school official 
  1.12  and with purpose to terrorize the official or in reckless 
  1.13  disregard of the risk of causing such terror, is guilty of a 
  1.14  misdemeanor.  As used in this subdivision, "school official" 
  1.15  includes teachers, school administrators, and other employees of 
  1.16  a public or private school.  Whoever violates this subdivision a 
  1.17  second or subsequent time is guilty of a gross misdemeanor. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.19     Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to 
  1.20  offenses committed on or after that date.
