A bill for an act
relating to transportation; providing for green lights on certain vehicles operated
by a severe weather spotter; amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, sections 169.58,
by adding a subdivision; 169.64, subdivision 3.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 169.58, is amended by adding a
subdivision to read:

new text begin Severe weather spotter. new text end

new text begin (a) A severe weather spotter may operate a motor
vehicle that is equipped with no more than two identification lights if the person:

new text begin (1) is performing duties as a severe weather spotter;
new text end

new text begin (2) has parked the motor vehicle; and
new text end

new text begin (3) carries a certificate as provided in paragraphs (c) and (d).

new text begin (b) The identification lights under this subdivision:

new text begin (1) must be the color green;
new text end

new text begin (2) may be solid, flashing, oscillating, alternating, or rotating; and
new text end

new text begin (3) must meet the requirements of the commissioner under section 169.65.

new text begin (c) A sheriff or chief of police shall issue an identification light certificate to a severe
weather spotter who has completed training in weather spotting provided by the National
Weather Service or a recognized severe weather identification and reporting organization.

new text begin (d) The commissioner of public safety shall establish a standard identification light
certificate for use under this subdivision.

Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 169.64, subdivision 3, is amended to read:
