  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to commerce; regulating fees charged for 
  1.3             copies of consumer reports; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 1996, section 13C.01, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 13C.01, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [FEE FOR REPORT.] (a) A consumer who is the 
  1.9   subject of a consumer report maintained by a consumer reporting 
  1.10  agency is entitled to request and receive by mail, for a charge 
  1.11  not to exceed $8, a free copy of the consumer report once twice 
  1.12  in any 12-month period.  A consumer reporting agency may impose 
  1.13  a charge not to exceed $8 for the third and each subsequent copy 
  1.14  requested by the consumer in the same 12-month period.  The 
  1.15  mailing must contain a statement of the consumer's right to 
  1.16  dispute and correct any errors and of the procedures set forth 
  1.17  in the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act, United States Code, 
  1.18  title 15, sections 1681 et seq., for that purpose.  The consumer 
  1.19  reporting agency shall respond to a request under this 
  1.20  subdivision within 30 days. 
  1.21     (b) A consumer who exercises the right to dispute and 
  1.22  correct errors is entitled, after doing so, to request and 
  1.23  receive by mail, without charge, a copy of the consumer report 
  1.24  in order to confirm that the consumer report was corrected.
