A bill for an act
relating to education; requiring reports of financial and property losses involving
theft in public schools; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes,
chapter 123B.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

School districts and charter schools
annually by June 30 must use an electronic format to report to the commissioner the
financial and property losses, other than minimal losses, involving theft that occurred in
the district or charter school during the immediately preceding school year. The report
must include at least the following information:

(1) a description of the financial or property loss that occurred as a result of the theft;

(2) where, at what time, and under what circumstances the theft occurred;
new text end
new text begin
(3) the cost of the theft to the school; and
new text end
new text begin
(4) the action taken by the school administration to respond to the theft.

The commissioner must allow school districts and charter schools to report aggregate
data under this section.

The commissioner shall compile the information
received under subdivision 1 and report it annually to the commissioner of public safety
and the legislature, and include it on school performance report cards under section
120B.36.

This section is effective for the 2009-2010 school year and
later.
