  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to motor vehicles; defining "residence" for 
  1.3             purposes of the 60-day exemption from vehicle 
  1.4             registration for new residents; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 2000, section 168.012, subdivision 8.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 168.012, 
  1.8   subdivision 8, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 8.  [60-DAY EXEMPTION FOR VEHICLE OF NEW RESIDENT.] 
  1.10  Every passenger automobile, travel trailer, other than 
  1.11  manufactured homes, or passenger car utility trailer duly 
  1.12  registered in any foreign state, district, territory, or country 
  1.13  and displaying all license number plates or like insignia 
  1.14  required by the laws of such state, district, territory, or 
  1.15  country shall be exempt from the provisions of this chapter 
  1.16  during the first 60 days of residence of the owner in this 
  1.17  state; provided that if the 60-day period expires after the 15th 
  1.18  day of any month, the remainder of that month shall be deemed to 
  1.19  be within the 60-day period and provided further that any such 
  1.20  vehicles shall become subject to the provisions of this chapter 
  1.21  immediately upon transfer of the ownership of such vehicles or 
  1.22  upon expiration of the registration.  For purposes of this 
  1.23  subdivision, "residence" means maintaining a domicile in 
  1.24  Minnesota with the intent to spend at least six months of each 
  1.25  year in Minnesota.
