A bill for an act
relating to education; modifying the Labor Day school start provisions for two
years; repealing the Labor Day school start provision after studying its effect;
repealing Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 120A.40.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 120A.40, a school district may begin
the school year on any day before Labor Day only for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011
school years.

The commissioner of education shall contract with an independent firm to study and
make recommendations on the impact of repealing the Labor Day school start date on the
tourism industry in Minnesota. The commissioner must submit a report including the
findings and recommendations of the study to the legislative committees with jurisdiction
over education policy and finance by January 15, 2011.
