  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to public safety; providing a statewide 
  1.3             policy on school lockers; proposing coding for new law 
  1.4             in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 127. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [127.47] [SCHOOL LOCKER POLICY.] 
  1.7      Subdivision 1.  [POLICY.] It is the policy of the state of 
  1.8   Minnesota that:  
  1.9      "School lockers are the property of the school district.  
  1.10  At no time does the school district relinquish its exclusive 
  1.11  control of lockers provided for the convenience of students.  
  1.12  Periodic general inspection of lockers may be conducted by 
  1.13  school authorities for any reason at any time, without notice, 
  1.14  without student consent, and without a search warrant." 
  1.15     Subd. 2.  [DISSEMINATION.] The locker policy must be 
  1.16  disseminated to parents and students in the way that other 
  1.17  policies of general application to students are disseminated.  
  1.18  Also a copy of the policy must be provided to a student the 
  1.19  first time after the policy is effective that the student is 
  1.20  given the use of a locker. 
  1.21     Sec. 2.  [TIME OF EFFECT.] 
  1.22     Section 1 is effective beginning with the 1995-1996 school 
  1.23  year.
