1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating the East Ridge High School Speech Team for placing third
1.3at the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions.
1.4WHEREAS, speech is a highly competitive event requiring long hours of research, practice,
1.5and preparation and develops the skills needed for articulate leadership; and
1.6WHEREAS, high intellectual ability, skill, and maturity are required to win a speech
1.7competition; and
1.8WHEREAS, from May 11 to 13 in Denver, Colorado, the East Ridge High School Speech
1.9Team participated in the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions, a contest that
1.10brings over 900 students from around the country to compete in oral interpretation and oratory; and
1.11WHEREAS, the team ranked third overall in the large-school division, including strong
1.12performances from East Ridge team members McCrossen Schiller, Ruth Erikstrup, and Joey Engh;
1.13and
1.14WHEREAS, five East Ridge team members placed in various contest categories: Tre' Edgerton
1.15in original oratory (second place), Jayden Ogbodo in poetry (third place), Tony May in humorous
1.16interpretation (fifth place), Gabby Franus in humorous interpretation (eighth place), and Makehba
1.17Nelson in original oratory (eleventh place); and
1.18NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.19the East Ridge High School Speech Team and its coaches, Katie and Alex Carlson, are congratulated
1.20for their third-place finish.
1.21BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a
1.22copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the chair of the
1.23Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the principal of East Ridge High
1.24School.
