1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Minnesota Orchestra music director Osmo Vanska.
1.3WHEREAS, Osmo Vanska became the tenth music director of the Minnesota Orchestra in
1.4September 2003; and
1.5WHEREAS, Osmo Vanska has led the orchestra on five major European tours, as well as a
1.62018 visit to London's BBC Proms, and on historic tours to Cuba in 2015 and South Africa in 2018.
1.7The Cuba tour was the first by an American orchestra since the thaw in Cuban-American diplomatic
1.8relations, while the five-city South African tour, part of a celebration of Nelson Mandela's centennial,
1.9was the first-ever visit to the country by a professional United States orchestra. Osmo Vanska also
1.10led the orchestra in appearances at New York's Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Chicago's
1.11Symphony Choir, and community venues across Minnesota; and
1.12WHEREAS, Osmo Vanska's recording projects with the orchestra have been met with great
1.13success, including their ongoing initiative to record all ten of Mahler's symphonies. The first release
1.14in the series, Mahler's First Symphony, earned a 2017 Grammy Award nomination for Best Orchestral
1.15Performance. His earlier recording projects with the orchestra include a three-disc cycle of the
1.16complete Sibelius symphonies, of which one disc won the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral
1.17Performance, and a two-disc set featuring live, in-concert recordings of pianist Stephan Hough
1.18performing Tchaikovsky's piano concertos and Concert Fantasia on the Hyperion Label; and
1.19WHEREAS, as a guest conductor, Osmo Vanska has led all the major American and European
1.20orchestras. He has appeared with the orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles, New
1.21York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Abroad, he has led the Berlin Philharmonic,
1.22London's BBC Symphony, London Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna
1.23Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Czech Philharmonic, Helsinki
1.24Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony
1.25Orchestra in Taipei, and other major ensembles; and
2.1WHEREAS, Osmo Vanska's honors and distinctions included an honorary doctorate from
2.2the University of Glasgow, a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for his outstanding contributions
2.3to classical music, and the Ditson Award from Columbia University for his support of American
2.4music. Musical America named him 2005 Conductor of the Year, in 2008 he received an honorary
2.5doctorate from the University of Minnesota as well as a Champion of New Music Award from the
2.6American Composers Forum, and in 2010 the Minneapolis Star Tribune named him Artist of the
2.7Year; and
2.8WHEREAS, Osmo Vanska will finish his 19-year tenure with the Minnesota Orchestra in
2.9August 2022 and will join founding music director Emil Oberhoffer and sixth music director
2.10Stanislaw Skrowaczewski as the longest-tenured music directors in Minnesota Orchestra history;
2.11and
2.12NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.13congratulates Minnesota Orchestra music director Osmo Vanska on his outstanding musical
2.14contributions to the state, country, and world and wishes him well in his future plans.
2.15BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.16enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.17Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Osmo Vanska.
