1.1A Senate resolution
1.2commending Bud Bjornaraa for 41 years of dedicated service to the teaching
1.3and coaching professions.
1.4WHEREAS, a member of the teaching and coaching professions must motivate students
1.5and players and lead by example; and
1.6WHEREAS, Bud dedicated his educational career to teaching physical education and coaching
1.7students in the fundamentals of football, track and field, and strength and conditioning; and
1.8WHEREAS, Bud was born in 1938, in Oklee, Minnesota, and graduated from the University
1.9of North Dakota in 1961 with degrees in physical education and industrial technology and pursued
1.10postgraduate studies in Wisconsin and Minnesota before starting his teaching and coaching career
1.11in Wisconsin and moving to Minnesota in 1970 to teach and coach high school at Richfield for six
1.12years and at Apple Valley for 23 years; and
1.13WHEREAS, Bud's commitment to higher education served as a model for his student-athletes
1.14and his background as a four-sport athlete provided him with the skills and knowledge to develop
1.15a track-and-field dynasty at Apple Valley in the late 1980s and early 1990s, finishing with a 362-70
1.16career dual record; and
1.17WHEREAS, Bud is also a skilled strength-and-conditioning coach, having served as the
1.18first such coach for the Minnesota Vikings in 1984 and having published two books on strength
1.19and conditioning, and continues to volunteer at Pequot Lakes High School; and
1.20WHEREAS, Bud has been bestowed with many honors throughout his illustrious career
1.21including but not limited to Minnesota State Track Coach of the Year (1986), Apple Valley Teacher
1.22of the Year (1997), National High School Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year
1.23(1999), the Minnesota State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2000), and the Minnesota
1.24National Strength and Conditioning Hall of Fame (2008); and
1.25NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.26commends Bud Bjornaraa for 41 years of dedication and commitment and wishes him continued
1.27happiness in his retirement.
1.28BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare a
1.29copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the
1.30Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Bud Bjornaraa.
