1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Nicollet Junior High School in Burnsville on being named an AVID
1.3National Demonstration School.
1.4WHEREAS, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national program
1.5that opens up possibilities for students to accomplish more than they ever imagined by increasing
1.6academic skills, raising expectations and building confidence; and
1.7WHEREAS, AVID is implemented in more than 4,900 schools around the country, but
1.8only 140 have been selected as National Demonstration Schools; and
1.9WHEREAS, at Nicollet Junior High School in Burnsville, AVID is both a building-wide
1.10initiative and an elective class designed to help students prepare for and succeed in college by
1.11developing critical thinking and organizational skills and establishing a "college-bound" culture
1.12among students; and
1.13WHEREAS, AVID began in 2010 at Nicollet, and has been successful in using the AVID
1.14program to help students succeed academically and prepare for college; and
1.15WHEREAS, based on their outstanding success, Nicollet recently was named a National
1.16Demonstration School; and
1.17WHEREAS, with this recognition, Nicollet will serve as a model for other schools looking
1.18to implement or improve their AVID programs; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.20it congratulates Nicollet Junior High School in Burnsville on being named an AVID National
1.21Demonstration School.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair
2.3of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Superintendent Joe Gothard.
