1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Elaina Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota, for receiving the Girl Scout
1.3Gold Award.
1.4WHEREAS, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, helping girls to reach
1.5their full potential, develop positive values, and contribute to the improvement of society through their
1.6abilities, leadership skills, and cooperation with others; and
1.7WHEREAS, to earn the highest award given by the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A., the Gold Award, a
1.8Girl Scout in high school must complete leadership journeys that help her discover her interests, connect
1.9with others, and take action to make the world a better place. She must then spend at least 80 hours planning
1.10and completing a comprehensive and sustainable take action project that uses her talent and passion to
1.11positively impact her community; and
1.12WHEREAS, Elaina Jones has displayed the attributes of a responsible and serving member of the
1.13Girl Scouts and has completed all the requirements necessary to earn the Gold Award; and
1.14WHEREAS, Elaina has already earned the Bronze Award and the Silver Award and is a student at
1.15Washburn High School where she is very involved in sports and extracurricular activities; and
1.16WHEREAS, Elaina is a competitive member of the Washburn Nordic ski team and the debate team.
1.17At Elaina's former high school in Middleton, Wisconsin, she played volleyball and was a member of the
1.18debate team. Elaina also helped establish the Middleton High School Green Team and served as vice president.
1.19She is co-founder and director of the nonprofit Next Chapter Academic Tutoring and is a member of the
1.20National Charity League; and
1.21WHEREAS, for her Gold Award project, Elaina restored a prairie next to Northside Elementary
1.22School in Middleton and implemented a sustainability and education program to support the improvements
1.23made to the prairie ecosystem. Her education program is accessible to all Northside teachers and features a
1.24plant presentation, age-specific worksheets and activities, and a mindfulness guide. She ensured that all
1.25organic material left over from the project was disposed of through composting and solidified a partnership
1.26between the Middleton Fire Department and the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District to ensure
1.27annual, volunteer-based prairie burns; and
1.28WHEREAS, Elaina supervised student volunteers who removed invasive species and planted over
1.29100 native prairie plants donated by the Plant Dane Native Plant Program; and
1.30WHEREAS, Elaina Jones serves as a role model to her peers and fellow Girl Scouts and will be
1.31recognized for her achievement of the Gold Award in April 2022; and
1.32NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.33congratulates Elaina Jones for receiving the Girl Scout Gold Award and extends best wishes for her future
1.34endeavors.
1.35BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an enrolled
1.36copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair of the Senate
1.37Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Elaina Jones.
