A bill for an act
relating to public health; requiring information on meningococcal disease, human
papilloma virus, and other diseases and vaccines to be provided; proposing
coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 144.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

[144.3353] INFORMATION ON PRETEEN IMMUNIZATIONS.

(a) The commissioner of health must prepare informational materials on
meningococcal disease and its vaccines, human papilloma virus and its vaccine, and other
diseases for which preteens may be vaccinated.

(b) The information about meningococcal disease must include:

(1) its causes and symptoms, how meningococcal disease is spread, and where
parents or guardians can obtain additional information on the disease and on its vaccines;
and

(2) current recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention regarding the vaccines for meningococcal disease and where a vaccination
can be received.

(c) The information about human papilloma virus disease must include:

(1) its causes and symptoms, how human papilloma virus disease is spread, and
where parents or guardians may obtain additional information on the disease and on
its vaccine; and

(2) current recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention regarding the vaccine for human papilloma virus disease and where a
vaccination can be received.

(d) The commissioner of education must make available to every public and
private school in the state that enrolls students in grades 6 to 12 information described in
this section, and must encourage schools to make the information available to parents.
This must be done in a manner the commissioner of education deems to be the most
cost-effective and programmatically effective, and must include posting the information to
the Department of Education's Web site.

(e) Nothing in this section shall be construed to require students to receive a
meningococcal vaccination or a human papilloma virus vaccination to remain enrolled in
school or require the school to provide the vaccinations to students.
