A bill for an act
relating to consumer protection; requiring the attorney general to maintain a
consumer complaint database; amending Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 8.32,
by adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 8.32, is amended by adding a subdivision
to read:

new text begin Consumer complaint database. new text end

new text begin (a) The attorney general shall maintain
a database that includes summary data, as defined in section 13.02, subdivision 19,
regarding complaints received by the attorney general involving purchases of consumer
goods or services. The data must include a listing of the number of complaints based on:

new text begin (1) types of consumer goods or services purchased;
new text end

new text begin (2) nature of businesses that are the subject of complaints;
new text end

new text begin (3) statutory or other basis for complaints;
new text end

new text begin (4) actions taken by attorney general in response to complaints; and
new text end

new text begin (5) resolution of complaints.

new text begin (b) Information in the database must be updated on at least an annual basis.

new text begin (c) The database must be easily accessible to the public and must not include data
that are not public data, as defined in section 13.02, subdivision 8a.
