1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Colby Hansen of Fridley for his bravery and service to his community.
1.3WHEREAS, on the morning of February 1, 2017, Laurie Harms lay on the cold concrete of
1.4her Fridley driveway, unable to move after a slip on a patch of ice had brought her down hard; and
1.5WHEREAS, with the temperature in the teens that morning, hypothermia would set in over
1.6time, and her injury could worsen if she didn't get help soon; and
1.7WHEREAS, walking to Fridley Middle School, sixth-grader Colby Hansen heard the screams,
1.8saw a woman on the ground waving her arms, and went to help; and
1.9WHEREAS, 11-year-old Colby called 911 when he found her and calmly answered the
1.10emergency dispatcher's ­questions and an older boy who hasn't yet been identified also stopped to
1.11help; and
1.12WHEREAS, Laurie believes Colby saved her life because if he hadn't come along, she might
1.13have lain on the ground for eight hours until students from the school about two blocks away passed
1.14by again; and
1.15WHEREAS, Laurie, who was in a wheelchair after a shattered bone was replaced with an
1.16artificial hip, only learned his name when he stopped by with a box of chocolates and get-well card
1.17after he noticed her car back in the driveway after her five-day hospital stay; and
1.18WHEREAS, on February 14, Fridley Middle School and the Fridley Police Department
1.19recognized Colby for his role in assisting Laurie, a heroic accomplishment deserving of special
1.20legislative mention; and
1.21WHEREAS, Colby's family, fellow students, teachers, and Laurie and her family were there,
1.22and school administrators gave Colby 50 GRITs, which are tickets awarded to students for good
1.23behavior that they can redeem for snacks and other items; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.2congratulates Colby Hansen of Fridley for his bravery and service in helping save the life of another
2.3person.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.6Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Colby Hansen.
