1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Terry Mattson on being named Minnesota's Outstanding Individual in
1.3Tourism.
1.4WHEREAS, each year at its annual conference, Explore Minnesota Tourism, the state's
1.5largest tourism office, recognizes the outstanding work done by individuals, businesses, and
1.6destinations throughout Minnesota; and
1.7WHEREAS, Terry Mattson, President and CEO of Visit Duluth, has nearly three decades
1.8of experience marketing Duluth's hospitality industry, including 23 years at the head of Visit
1.9Duluth, and his leadership has helped Duluth's tourism tax revenues increase from $80 million a
1.10year in the late 1980s to nearly $800 million today; and
1.11WHEREAS, Terry began his career with Grandma's Marathon, joined Visit Duluth in 1985
1.12with the responsibility of developing major special events, and was in charge of public relations
1.13and sales prior to becoming President in 1990; and
1.14WHEREAS, in 1991, he created what is now known as the AMSOIL Duluth National
1.15Snocross, snowmobile racing's largest and oldest snocross event that kicks off a season-long
1.16national series; and
1.17WHEREAS, in 2008, he developed a series of maritime festivals for Duluth, culminating
1.18in Tall Ships Duluth 2010, one of the grandest and most successful tall ship spectacles in the
1.19country, and arguably northern Minnesota's biggest event ever; and
1.20WHEREAS, he is a past president of the Minnesota Association of Convention and
1.21Visitors Bureaus and currently serves with both the Minnesota Tourism Advisory Council and
1.22the Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition; and
2.1WHEREAS, he was named one of 10 Duluth movers and shakers by the Minneapolis/St.
2.2Paul Business Journal, and also recently received the RSVP MN/Meetings: Minnesota's
2.3Hospitality Journal "Vision Award" for leadership following the June 2012 flash flood; and
2.4WHEREAS, on February 12, 2013, Terry was named Minnesota's Outstanding Individual
2.5in Tourism, an award that is the top state honor for Minnesota's nearly $12 billion industry,
2.6by Explore Minnesota Tourism; and
2.7NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.8congratulates Terry Mattson on being named Minnesota's Outstanding Individual in Tourism and
2.9commends him on his long-time role in driving tourism success in Duluth, northern Minnesota,
2.10and throughout the state.
2.11BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.12enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.13Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Terry Mattson.
