1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring the city of Golden Valley on the occasion of its 125th anniversary.
1.3WHEREAS, our state is enhanced by the presence of those communities that have stood
1.4the test of time; and reaching 125 years is a significant milestone in the life of a community; and
1.5WHEREAS, the city of Golden Valley, founded in 1886, was mainly a farm area for Irish,
1.6German, and Scandinavian immigrants and featured the Ewald Brothers Dairy, the first dairy in
1.7the region to use glass bottles and to pasteurize milk; and
1.8WHEREAS, Golden Valley was also known for Hart's Greenhouse, which raised flowers
1.9and was the biggest greenhouse west of the Mississippi in the 1920s; and
1.10WHEREAS, the city continued to grow as more houses were being built in the 1930s and
1.111940s, but Golden Valley began its transformation as a corporate town when General Mills began
1.12building its new headquarters near the intersection of what is now I-394 and Highway 169; and
1.13WHEREAS, today, about 20,000 people live in Golden Valley, and the city is home to the
1.14headquarters of General Mills and Allianz Life Insurance Company, has a major Honeywell plant,
1.15and institutions such as the Courage Center and the Animal Humane Society; and
1.16WHEREAS, in 2011, Golden Valley is celebrating its 125th anniversary; and
1.17WHEREAS, many events are being held to commemorate this anniversary, including a bus
1.18tour of historic places, an old-time music festival, a dinner tribute to people who have lived in
1.19the city for at least 75 years, creating a Golden Valley Hall of Fame, collecting items for a time
1.20capsule, and having its first-ever volunteer day; and
1.21NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.22congratulates Golden Valley on its 125th anniversary and extends best wishes to the citizens of
1.23Golden Valley for their celebration.
1.24BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
1.25an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
1.26of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the city of
1.27Golden Valley.
