1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring June Fremont for being selected to join a World War II Honor
1.3Flight.
1.4WHEREAS, June Fremont joined the Marines in 1943 and was stationed at the Marine
1.5Corps Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.; she spent time with
1.6First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Vice-President Harry Truman, had a memorable dinner with
1.7Bernard Baruch, a senior advisor to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and stepped in at a rally
1.8to introduce Lord Halifax, British Ambassador to the U.S.; and
1.9WHEREAS, June worked at the Pentagon, where she had a number of responsibilities,
1.10including providing a daily "muster roll" that identified the location for all of the Marines in her
1.11assigned group throughout the world; June was promoted to Sergeant while at the Pentagon; and
1.12WHEREAS, one of June's most important responsibilities was to accurately gather
1.13information for Marines who were killed in action or missing in action and write the letters that
1.14were delivered to their parents; she also wrote Presidential Citations that were given to Marine
1.15units that demonstrated extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy; and
1.16WHEREAS, in her free time, June and some of her Marine girlfriends would visit soldiers
1.17at Walter Reed hospital, bringing them fresh fruit from the barracks and writing letters for those
1.18who were unable to write; and
1.19WHEREAS, while stationed in the Washington, D.C. area, June met her future husband,
1.20Leo Fremont, an Army Tech Sergeant who was stationed at nearby Fort Mead Army Base, and
1.21when Leo was shipped over to Europe, June volunteered to be part of the first company of Marine
1.22Corps women to be detached to the overseas base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; this first group of
1.23women was sent to Pearl Harbor to take over non-combat related jobs from privates who were
1.24returning from the Pacific theater so that these privates could go home; and
1.25WHEREAS, while stationed at Pearl Harbor, June's responsibilities included "island
1.26hopping" to deliver secure messages throughout Hawaii, running the IBM data processing
1.27machines, and providing motor transport, including driving high-ranking Marine officers around
1.28the base in Jeeps; June was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in January 1946; and
1.29WHEREAS, June, who has worked for 3M since 1971 and claims the honor of being 3M's
1.30oldest employee at a very young 92, has been selected to join a Twin Cities Honor Flight in
1.31Washington, D.C., and she will be one of three women among the 78 veterans taking part in the
1.32program on Saturday, April 26, which celebrates the service and sacrifices of veterans like June.
1.33NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.34thanks and commends June Fremont for her service to our country, and congratulates her on being
1.35selected to join a World War II Honor Flight.
1.36BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.37enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.38Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to June Fremont.
