1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Alexander Claycomb on being named a National Merit Commended Student.
1.3WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for
1.4recognition and scholarships that began in 1955; and
1.5WHEREAS, high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by
1.6taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an
1.7initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year; in late September, about 34,000
1.8of the approximately 50,000 high scorers received Letters of Commendation in recognition of
1.9outstanding academic promise; and
1.10WHEREAS, some 15,000 semifinalists were notified by mail at their home addresses that
1.11they had advanced to finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a
1.12certificate to present to each finalist; and
1.13WHEREAS, Alexander Claycomb, a student at Bloomington Jefferson High School,
1.14was recently notified of National Merit Commended status, a noteworthy honor deserving of
1.15legislative recognition; and
1.16NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.17congratulates Alexander Claycomb on being named a National Merit Commended Student.
1.18BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.19enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.20Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Alexander Claycomb.
