1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Independence Day of Somalia.
1.3WHEREAS, the Somali Republic was formed on July 1, 1960, as a result of the unification
1.4of the Trust Territory of Somalia, formerly Italian Somalia, and the State of Somalia, formerly
1.5British Somaliland; and
1.6WHEREAS, following the unification a government was formed with the guidance of a
1.7trusteeship, protectorate governments, Haji Bashir Ismail Yusuf, who became the first president of
1.8the Somali National Assembly, and Aden Abdullah Osman Daar, who became the first president
1.9of the Somali Republic; and
1.10WHEREAS, on June 20, 1961, a successful constitutional referendum was held to institute
1.11a new constitution representative of the interests of those unified as the Somali Republic;
1.12NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.13commemorates July 1 as Independence Day of Somalia and extends warm wishes to all those who
1.14observe the significance of this holiday.
1.15BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.16enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.17Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Somali community
1.18of Minnesota.
