1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Alexander Layton for being named a National Merit Commended Scholar
1.3and a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.
1.4WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for
1.5recognition and scholarships that began in 1955; and
1.6WHEREAS, the National Hispanic Recognition Program identifies about 5,000
1.7academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students of over 250,000 who take the
1.8Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test; and
1.9WHEREAS, Commended Students achieve candidacy for special scholarships sponsored
1.10by corporations and businesses; and
1.11WHEREAS, these students, who are at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino descent, come
1.12from the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands, and the
1.13Marshall Islands, and include United States citizens attending schools abroad; and
1.14WHEREAS, to be eligible, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit
1.15Scholarship Qualifying Test by October of their junior year in high school, achieve the minimum
1.16required cutoff score, and achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher by the
1.17end of their junior year; and
1.18WHEREAS, Alexander Layton, an Edina High School student, was recently notified of
1.19being a National Merit Commended scholar and a National Hispanic Recognition scholar, a
1.20tremendous honor deserving of special legislative recognition; and
2.1NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota
2.2that it congratulates Alexander Layton for being named a National Merit Commended Scholar
2.3and a National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.6Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Alexander Layton.
