1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Dame Julie Andrews
1.3WHEREAS, the legendary performer Julie Andrews will be visiting Minnesota's Perpich
1.4Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley on May 12; and
1.5WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews has a career spanning over six decades that encompasses
1.6Broadway, the London stage, Hollywood films, award-winning television shows, multiple album
1.7releases and concert tours including Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, Camelot, The Princess
1.8Diaries, and Shrek; and
1.9WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews' accomplishments are unsurpassed, as she has been a recipient
1.10of every major arts honor, including the Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, and Grammy, and awards
1.11from Theatre World, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts; and
1.12WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews is a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from
1.13Americans for the Arts and a National Arts Award as an acknowledged champion of literary arts
1.14and advocate for childhood literacy with more than 30 years of publishing children's literature
1.15including her recent children's book, "The Very Fairy Princess Takes the Stage," co-authored
1.16with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton; and
1.17WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews has also been recognized for her humanitarian efforts with the
1.18United Nations International Fund for Women, Operation USA, UNICEF, Save The Children,
1.19World Vision, the Foundation for Hereditary Disease, Alzheimer funding, and Haitian earthquake
1.20relief; and
1.21WHEREAS, in 2000 Ms. Andrews was named Dame Commander of the British Empire
1.22by Queen Elizabeth II; and
1.23WHEREAS, Ms. Andrews will visit the Perpich Center for Arts Education because of its
1.24nationally recognized reputation for academic excellence and its mission to provide arts education
1.25to Minnesota educators and students across the state; and
1.26NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that
1.27Dame Julie Andrews is recognized and honored for her lifelong commitment to arts education,
1.28her charitable work, and her celebrated contributions in film, stage, and music.
1.29BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.30enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.31Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Dame Julie Andrews.
