1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Megan Hall on being named the 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
1.3WHEREAS, Education Minnesota, an organization representing over 70,000 educators,
1.4has annually for the last 49 years selected its Teacher of the Year from a field of elite candidates
1.5that have established themselves as the best at their profession; and
1.6WHEREAS, Megan Hall, who has a bachelor's degree from Macalester College and a
1.7master's in science education from the College of St. Catherine, said that, when she was younger,
1.8she wanted to be a doctor, but changed her mind after volunteering at St. Joseph's Home for
1.9Children in Minneapolis; and
1.10WHEREAS, Megan has been teaching high school biology and life sciences at Open
1.11World Learning Community in downtown St. Paul since 2006 and has been teaching in St.
1.12Paul since 2002; and
1.13WHEREAS, she has said that the achievement gap in education is the biggest issue facing
1.14her field, and believes it is her duty to help her students remove any obstacles to a fair life; and
1.15WHEREAS, according to her, "education is the key to closing the achievement gap, I think
1.16that teachers are the agents of democracy and the more we work together in our schools, the closer
1.17we're going to get to a true democracy"; and
1.18WHEREAS, she also wants to help teachers collaborate with their colleagues and foster
1.19long-term relationships with students and their families so they'll feel more fulfilled in their
1.20jobs; and
1.21WHEREAS, she also says the most important thing people should know about her is that
1.22she's the mother of a three-year-old who's the center of her world; and
2.1WHEREAS, for her outstanding accomplishments, Megan became the third Teacher of
2.2the Year from St. Paul Public Schools; and
2.3WHEREAS, as Teacher of the Year, Megan will have an opportunity to go NASA's space
2.4camp, which she calls the dream of every science teacher, and now represents Minnesota as a
2.5candidate for National Teacher of the Year; and
2.6NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota
2.7that it congratulates Megan Hall on being named the 2013 Minnesota Teacher of the Year and
2.8commends her for her dedication to a noble profession.
2.9BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.10enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.11Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Megan Hall.
