1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing Minnesota City on its 165th anniversary.
1.3WHEREAS, Minnesota City was officially founded on May 9, 1852, and will be celebrating
1.4its 165th anniversary on May 20, 2017; and
1.5WHEREAS, the Western Farm and Village Association was comprised of people desiring
1.6to emigrate to the west from New York City and the location they picked became Minnesota City;
1.7and
1.8WHEREAS, Minnesota City was once the largest community west of the Mississippi. They
1.9had the first bridge, church, post office and sawmill in Winona County; and
1.10WHEREAS, the Baptist Church is the oldest in the county and was established on July 11,
1.111852. The church hosts an annual Christmas gathering that resembles stories of community gatherings
1.12held in the past. The First Evangelical Lutheran Church celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2016;
1.13and
1.14WHEREAS, in the fall of 1852, the first school in the county opened in Minnesota City and
1.15the first district school was established in the county in 1853; and
1.16WHEREAS, Minnesota City residents formed the Garvin Brook Disaster Relief foundation
1.17to aid and support residents and render community assistance after the flood of 2007 that wiped
1.18out their bridge and railroad bedding; and
1.19WHEREAS, in the early days of Minnesota City apple and plum trees were imported from
1.20Europe and are thought to be the first orchards established on this side of the Mississippi River;
1.21and
1.22NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.23congratulates Minnesota City on its 165th anniversary.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Minnesota City
2.4Council.
